CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A pair of home games are on tap for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball program as it hosts UTSA at 7 p.m. Friday in a White Out at the Dugan Wellness Center, followed by a 7 p.m. Monday game against Trinity (TX) in the American Bank Center.
Â
Monday's game will be a celebration of the 2022 Southland Conference Tournament championship team. A&M-Corpus Christi will unveil a SLC Championship banner and an NCAA Tournament banner, in addition to a pre-game ring ceremony.
Â
The 2021-22 squad made its second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance after winning its third conference championship and first since 2006-07. The Islanders defeated Southeastern Louisiana 73-65 in the Southland Championship game to earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Â
The Islanders recorded their sixth 20-win season in program history and first since 2016-17. A&M-Corpus Christi more-than quadrupled its win total from last season when it finished 5-19 overall. It marked the largest year-to-year turnaround in program history and one of the largest in the nation.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi opened the 2022-23 season Monday at Mississippi State. The Islanders led 20-8 with 10:14 remaining in the first half and carried a 30-25 edge at the intermission before the Bulldogs came back in the second.
Terrion Murdix notched 10 points for his eighth consecutive double-figure scoring outing dating back to last year.
Â
UTSA and Trinity (TX) also began their 2022-23 seasons Monday, and coincidentally it was against each other. The Roadrunners won 74-47 after posting a +19 rebounding advantage. Josh Farmer came off the bench to tally a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Â
UTSA defeated a Trinity squad that finished 23-6 overall and 13-3 in conference last year. The Tigers advanced to the second round of the Division III NCAA Tournament.
