HOUSTON – A closely contested battle just didn't end in favor the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program as it dropped a 2-1 decision at HCU at Sorrels Field.
Â
The game was originally supposed to be played Friday evening but was postponed to Saturday due to inclement weather.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi (8-8-1, 5-6-1 SLC) scored in the 18th minute on a strike by sophomore
Morgan Westbury. It was her eighth goal of the season, which ranks third in the league. The eight goals also rank second all-time in program history in a single season, only behind Abby Deakin's nine in 2019.
Â
Though, the Huskies (6-9-3, 6-5-1 SLC) notched a pair of second half tallies to grab the result.
Â
"I could not ask more of these young ladies. They have run themselves into the ground fighting for this program," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
Â
Seven different Islanders recorded a shot in the match. In addition to Westbury's five,
Storm Harris,
Rachel Loetzer,
Jayden Rea,
Reese Cross,
Rebekah George and
Carmen Cervantez were all credited with one.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Levy made her third start of the season in net and blocked 11 saves. She played all 90 minutes along with defenders Rea and
Alana Mangan.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi split the season series with HCU after winning the first meeting by the same 2-1 score on Sept. 16 at home.
The Islanders will now turn their attention to the SLC Tournament. The conference has not yet released the bracket, but A&M-Corpus Christi is expected to be the No. 6 seed against third-seeded Texas A&M-Commerce. The tournament begins Wednesday in Natchitoches, Louisiana, hosted by Northwestern State.
