Soccer Season Ends after Hard-Fought Contest at SLC Tournament

NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's women's soccer team fell to A&M-Commerce in a narrow 2-1 loss in the SLC Soccer Tournament at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex Wednesday evening.

"This is the craziest season I have ever been involved in and I could not be prouder of this team's resilience through some incredible adversity," said head coach Craig Shaw. "It was a great game today from our team. We had chances to win it and luck was not with us, but we'll learn from the experience and come back even stronger."

A&M-Commerce scored the first goal of the game 36:19 into the match to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead in the first half. The Islanders struck back just over a minute into the second half as sophomore Morgan Westbury scored to tie the game at 1-1. With the match just under 52 minutes in, the Lions scored to gain a 2-1 lead over the Islanders to seal the victory.

Freshman Mai-Lisa Atis and sophomore Megan Guy both took three shots to lead the team in the matchup offensively. Westbury and Reese Cross, a junior, each had two shots with Cross earning one at the very end, just falling short of making it in the goal to send the game to overtime.

Westbury scored her ninth goal of the 2022 campaign when she tied the game up to tie the single-season record for the Islanders. The team collectively took 14 shots with four being on goal, making one into the net.

Sophomore Emily Levy played all 90 minutes in the net for A&M-Corpus Christi, earning eight saves on 17 shots faced as two squeaked by her. The game marked her second consecutive start and full game of the season.

The matchup concluded a record-breaking season for the Islanders and marked the fourth consecutive year the Islanders made it to the SLC Tournament.
