CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer team earned its second victory over UIW to conclude the season sweep, the first shutout victory for the Islanders, on Sunday afternoon at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer & Track Stadium.
"I'm absolutely buzzing," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "The ladies deserve the shutout and it's long overdue. I'm super proud of the way we had the long trip to Commerce and were able to bounce back against a very good UIW team."
Sophomore
Megan Guy scored the first goal of the day for the Islanders just 4:54 into the match to take an early 1-0 lead and earn the game-winning goal. Later, A&M-Corpus Christi earned a penalty kick that classmate
Morgan Westbury took and scored on, her third penalty goal of the season.
"It feels great and I feel like I couldn't be here without my team," said Westbury about her accomplishments thus far this season. She led the team with four shots in the effort with three of them being on target.
The team took a collective 12 shots on the day with eight of them going into the goal. Guy had one shot and the lone shot on target earned her a 1.000 on shooting for the day.
"I think it's a big switch around this semester and I think the team has a lot of chemistry this year and it's paying off in conference," said Guy about her scoring her fifth goal in conference play this season.
Junior
Rebekah George connected with sophomore
Gracie Gill to help Guy with the first goal. Gill would later go on to take two shots herself.
Sophomore
Zoe Theriot earned one save as she started in the goal for the Islanders with Junior
Kennedy Stelling also getting a save on the day in the second half.
A&M-Corpus Christi returns to the pitch Friday at 7:00 p.m. against McNeese at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer & Track Stadium.
