CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -
Rachel Loetzer, a sophomore on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's women's soccer team, earned Southland Defensive Player of the Week honors as announced by the conference Tuesday morning.
"It is so exciting to see Rachel, who is dominating every team as a defensive player, now adding goals to her game," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "I'm so happy for her!"
Loetzer scored two goals, helping propel the Islanders to a 4-0 shutout over Nicholls on Sunday afternoon. Her first goal of the game came at the 28:28 mark when she connected with senior
Emma Gibbs to place the ball in the net. She later made it in once again on an unassisted goal with the clock reading 84:48.
Nicole Randall, the midfielder coach, continued the praise of Loetzer, saying, "Rachel has been a fantastic addition to our midfield this fall. She's been a commanding presence defensively and in aerial challenges. For her to get a couple of goals when she's been so close to scoring in the last few games is awesome and very well deserved."
In her first season with A&M-Corpus Christi, Loetzer has made three goals with her first coming on the road against UTRGV in the second game of the season. She's contributed consistently to the team, having played in 14 games and making 11 starts for the team.
She has earned two game-winning goals in her 2022 campaign after having transferred from Texas Woman's University prior to the start of the year. Loetzer is the second player for the Islanders to win SLC Defensive Player of the Week with defender
Emma Crump, a sophomore, earning the recognition earlier in the season.
A&M-Corpus Christi will return to action at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer & Track Stadium on Friday at 7:00 p.m. as the team faces Northwestern State in the Radiology Associates Pink Game.
