Women’s Basketball Shuts Down UIW 62-43

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Getting it done on both ends of the court, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball program shined in a 62-43 victory over UIW in a non-conference game Sunday at the Dugan Wellness Center.

It was a wire-to-wire win for the Islanders (7-6) who jumped out to an 18-4 lead and never looked back.

A&M-Corpus Christi shot .500 (24-48) from the field, its second-highest percentage of the season. On the other end, it limited UIW (4-6) to a .302 (16-53) mark. The Islanders controlled the paint where they posted a 42-24 advantage.

Junior Alecia Westbrook neared a double-double with a game-high 17 points and eight rebounds. Senior Makinna Serrata tallied 14 points and sophomore Nabaweeyah McGill turned in eight points, seven rebounds and seven blocks.

A&M-Corpus Christi outrebounded UIW 36-28.

The Cardinals were led by Destiny Terrell who scored 12 points off the bench. Jaaucklyn Moore, the league's leading scorer with 18.1 points per game, was held scoreless. It was the first time she scored less than 10 points in a game.

The Islanders scored the first five points of the game on a jumper by Westbrook and a three by sophomore Violeta Verano. Still up 10-4, A&M-Corpus Christi went on an 8-0 run to lead 18-4 after a field goal by McGill.

A second chance bucket by senior Diamond Wraggs kept the Islanders in front 27-16 with 6:50 left in the second quarter. Back-to-back lay-ups near the end of the half by McGill extended it to 37-20 at the intermission.

Westbrook scored the first four points of the third quarter to further push the lead up to 41-20. A lay-up by sophomore Mireia Aguado made it a 50-26 game and another score by Aguado had the Islanders leading 54-28 heading to the fourth.

A&M-Corpus Christi's largest lead of the game 55-28 came after a free throw by Aguado with 9:31 left in the fourth. The fourth was the most competitive quarter between the two teams but the game was out of reach.
