CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In its second match in as many days, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program returned home to defeat UTSA 6-1 on Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
"We're very proud of the character these girls showed bouncing back from a tough road loss and winning 6-1 against a very respected rival. UTSA is a good team and today's match was a battle, much closer than the score. I love the guts these girls showed and the way they chose to win from the 'inside out' with their heart and fight. There was an opportunity today to play the 'excuse card' with rain, cold and getting in so late last night from College Station – but instead they played the character card and paid the price with their legs and really fought hard! They can definitely leave today with their heads held high and we're very proud of them for that," said head coach
Steve Moore.
The Islanders (5-1) won the doubles point after clinching it at the No. 2 position. The sophomore team of
Emma Aucagne and
Emma Honore notched a 6-2 victory over Jasmin Starr and Sophie Omowarare.
A&M-Corpus Christi won five of six singles courts. Sophomore
Leopoldine Boisseau, the reigning SLC Player of the Week winner, posted a convincing 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles.
At No. 1 and 2 singles, Aucagne and junior
Mariya Shumeika both battled back from being a set down. Aucagne dropped a tiebreaker but responded with a pair of 6-2 sets to win at the top. Shumeika fell 6-1 in the first but answered with a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 2.
Another win came at No. 4 where junior
Camille Townsend sandwiched a pair of 6-0 sets in the first and third to finish on top.
A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 14-6 all-time against UTSA and 12-1 at home.
The Islanders will remain at home Tuesday when they host Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
