CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Due to expected rain in Houston on Wednesday, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs will begin their 2022 seasons at home against Prairie View A&M in doubleheaders starting at 11 a.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Â
The Islanders were originally supposed to begin their quests to defend their championships on the road, but will instead travel to PVAMU on Tuesday, Jan. 25.
Â
"We are excited to start this journey off as a team. We're excited for the journey, the challenges, the opportunity to work together and push each other. The season is always about character and heart – and this team is loaded with character and heart," said head coach
Steve Moore. "Prairie View has been a respected opponent we've played for a long time home and away with a lot of other Texas schools. We look forward for the chance to compete and the challenge."
Â
Both the men and women return all six starting singles players from their championship lineups last season. Both teams ranked top-85 nationally and A&M-Corpus Christi was one of 39 schools in America with both teams at the 2021 NCAA Championships. Men's tennis has won 20 championships, the second-most in the history of the league for any sport.
Â
Last spring, the Islanders competed in the NCAA Tournament against Baylor, which was ranked No. 2 on the men's side and No. 8 on the women's. Sophomore
Ryuya Ata was up a set at No. 2 singles for the men, while sophomores
Emma Aucagne and
Emma Honore won at No. 2 doubles.
Â
It came after the men dropped just one court for the entirety of the Southland Conference Championships, while the women swept through three consecutive matches 5-0, 4-0 and 4-0.
Â
The men are 32-0 all-time against PVAMU, while the women are 29-0.
