CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The first competition of 2021-22 will take place this weekend when the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis programs host the Contender CrossFit Islander Open.

The women will play at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center and the men at the H-E-B Tennis Center. Matches begin at 9 a.m. Friday at both venues and will run all weekend with the finals on Sunday.

A&M-Corpus Christi will host North Texas, UTSA, Sam Houston, UTRGV, UIW, Tyler JC, UT-Tyler and Texas A&M-Kingsville. The student-athletes will compete among several flights of singles and doubles.

"Islanders tennis is incredibly proud to host a high-level, officially sanctioned college event this weekend for the Corpus Christi community and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi," said head coach Steve Moore. "We are incredibly grateful to long time Islanders tennis supporter, David Harris, and Contender CrossFit for their tremendous loyalty and support of Islanders tennis! I've always said we have the best Tennis Community in the nation and the relationship and support between Islanders tennis and the Corpus Christi community is the best any team or coach could ask for. This event is yet another example of that!"

The Islanders brought back all eight student-athletes on their women's team, and seven of nine on the men's side including all six starters. A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a season which saw the men win two championships and make their ninth NCAA Tournament, and the women won the conference tournament and played in their fourth NCAA Tournament.

This year, the two teams will be playing for their combined 14th and 15th NCAA Tournament appearances, and have the opportunity to increase their SLC Championships count to 32.
