BEAUMONT, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program left its mark on the Lamar Tournament this weekend by winning every flight at Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center over three days.
Â
It was an All-Islanders final in both Flight A singles and doubles. In doubles, juniors
Mariya Shumeika and
Camille Townsend swept through the bracket without dropping more than three games in a set. It included wins over teams from Lamar and Sam Houston before topping sophomore teammates
Emma Aucagne in
Emma Honore.
Â
It was the same in Flight A singles. Shumeika and Aucagne were scheduled to play each other for the championship, but due to rainy conditions Sunday the coaches agreed the two will play each other at a later date in Corpus Christi.
Â
In Flight B singles, Honore didn't drop a set en route to winning the bracket. She defeated Emmeline Polevoi from Lamar in the finals 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore
Kateryna Rublevska placed third in the bracket with a three-set win over Alba Perez from Lamar 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.
Â
"This was a great privilege and blessing to participate in this memorial tournament to honor the Joe Pyburn family. Big respect for Lamar, coach David Wong and the Morgan Family for putting on this event," said head coach
Steve Moore. "It was a great weekend for our girls. They competed incredibly hard, are improving tremendously and it's great to see their hard work validated. We asked them to work on certain things this summer and it's evident they did. What I love is that every girl fights, listens and is committed to our process. Cami and Marie were exceptional in doubles and they've added important elements to their game.
Emma Honore shined in singles. She's learned smart, aggressive and added a great slice to her game."
Â
The Islanders men had the weekend off from competition but will take the court again at the UTSA Open on Sept. 24-26.
