CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Handing McNeese its first conference loss of the year, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's soccer program blanked the Cowgirls 1-0 on Friday evening at Dugan Stadium.
The Islanders (3-4-1, 1-0-1 SLC) scored on a goal by sophomore
Maggie Murray in the 10th minute. After a feed from junior
Samantha Palomino, Murray made a run down the left side, pulled it back toward the center and fired far post into the lower right corner.
It was Murray's first goal of the season and fifth of her career.
"We saw the true heart of this team tonight," said head coach
Craig Shaw. "Passion, energy and fighting for the sister next to you. Now we have to back it up!"
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kennedy Stelling earned the clean sheet after making nine saves. It was her second shutout of the year.
Stelling was heavily aided by her back line. Sophomore
Emma Herrera and freshman
Emma Crump played all 90 minutes as center backs, while junior
Emma Gibbs logged 90 minutes at defensive midfield.
On the offensive side, senior
Reaghan Lang, freshman
Storm Harris and freshman
Megan Guy recorded two shots apiece. Murray and sophomore
Reese Cross also tallied shots.
McNeese (5-3-1, 2-1 SLC), which was coming off a 13-0 victory over Alcorn State, was led by Anna Watson's five shots.
A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 5-3-1 all-time against the Cowgirls and have won three consecutive meetings.
The match kicked off a four-game home stand for the Islanders. They'll close out the weekend Sunday in a 1 p.m. match against Northwestern State at Dugan Stadium.
