CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The 2019-20 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball program was honored with the Presidential Order of Silver Wave, awarded by President Dr. Kelly M. Miller on Tuesday at the President's Faculty and Staff Meeting in the Performing Arts Center.
The award, created in 2005, honors individuals or groups that bring national or international recognition to the University, and who, by their actions and accomplishments, are models of excellence and encouragement for students and colleagues.
The women's basketball team was chosen after it won its first-ever title in 2019-20. They won the Southland Conference regular season championship with a 23-7 (17-3 SLC) record. The Islanders earned the top overall seed in the conference tournament before it was canceled due to COVID-19.
"Never in my life have I seen a team play the way that they played. They were so dedicated and so ferocious. It didn't matter how many points they were ahead or how far they were behind, they played with an intensity that was awe-inspiring," Dr. Miller said. "They were an incredible group of young women and I am so proud of them. They will forever be champions on our campus."
It's just the third time in history that an athletics program was honored with this distinction and the first since 2007.
"On behalf of our women's basketball team, a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Miller for this recognition. This wonderful group of young ladies exemplifies the spirit of our program and our university president. They are a gritty and resilient group and we are proud to be members of the Islander family for life," said head coach
Royce Chadwick.
