CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In one of the toughest regions in the country, both the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's & women's tennis programs placed top-10 in the final Texas Region rankings.
The women were ranked No. 9 after posting a 22-5 record overall and 9-2 in conference. The Islanders swept through three matches in the SLC Tournament, defeating the host Lamar 4-0 in the championship.
The men finished ranked No. 10 after tallying a 19-5 record overall and 5-0 in conference. The Islanders entered the NCAA Tournament on a seven-match winning-streak, which included victories over Incarnate Word and the host Lamar in the SLC Tournament.
"We're all so proud of our men's and women's tennis teams to both finish top-10 in the Texas Region, widely considered the toughest region in the nation this year. These Islanders worked tirelessly hard and showed so much character with the choices they made. I've said so many times this year was so tempting to take that "poison cheese" in the mouse trap – called excuses. But this group instead chose the character road. They chose to be tough and control what they can control. They kept working and improving each week. At the end of the season, when it mattered most, they were playing their best tennis of the year. They were simply a joy to coach because they stood for all the good values you respect as a coach."
The Texas Region on the women's side featured the national champion, three teams ranked top-12 in the country and 11 teams ranked in the top-100. For the men, the Texas region saw four programs ranked top-10 in the country, including the national runner-up.
A&M-Corpus Christi tennis won three championships this year with a regular season and two postseason titles. The Islanders have won 28 SLC titles and have made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances.
