CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A Texas A&M-Corpus Christi three-run rally in the final home half fell short as Stephen F. Austin claimed the series finale in a 5-3 decision Sunday at Chapman Field.
Trailing the Lumberjacks 5-0 entering the ninth, the Islanders promptly loaded the bases on a
Josh Caraway double and
Mike Williams and
Brendan Ryan walks before a wild pitch allowed Caraway to kick off the rally as he raced home.
Leo Markotic brought Williams across on a sacrifice fly and
Scott Hastings made his only appearance on the day count with a two-out double that scored Ryan and made it 5-3.
The Islanders would get no closer as a right-field flyout ended the comeback bid and sealed SFA's lone weekend win.
SFA jumped on the scoreboard in the opening half with three-consecutive singles that plated a run before extending the lead to two with a one-run fourth. The Lumberjacks' pitching staff helped maintain the advantage with eight scoreless frames until both sides exchanged three runs in the ninth.
A&M-Corpus Christi's defense kept the home club within striking distance the entire way as they stranded 10 Lumberjacks on base.
Cole Fluta recorded the Islanders' only hit until the ninth as the home club benefited from seven walks.
Starting hurler
Tyler Miller (1-3) shouldered the Islanders' loss, allowing four hits and one run while fanning three in 2.2 innings of work.
Islanders conclude their home schedule at Chapman Field with a four-game series against Southland front runner Southeastern Louisiana starting with a Friday, May 14 contest at 6 p.m.
