Islanders, Lumberjacks Clash in Key Southland Four-Game Set

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball looks to bounce back in its penultimate home series, as the Islanders welcome Stephen F. Austin for a four-game series starting Friday, May 7 with a 6 p.m. nightcap, resuming with a Saturday doubleheader and concluding Sunday at 1 p.m. inside Chapman Field.

  Islander Notes
  • After A&M-Corpus Christi claimed the first two games in the series in Friday's doubleheader, Lamar won out in the single-game contests to split the series, 2-2. The Islanders outscored the Cardinals 17-7 in the twin bill but only managed to score three apiece on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Junior hurler John Gaddis pitched his fourth-straight, complete-game win and his second-straight shutout in a 6-0 victory in game one against Lamar. With the win, Gaddis moved into a tie for ninth in the complete-game, single-season record with four and is tied with Jimmy Hamon (2003) for the top spot in shutouts with two. On the all-time list, Gaddis' two shutouts ranks first alongside Trey Hearne (2004-05) and Jimmy Hamon (2003).
  • The Islanders have prevailed in three of their last four series, compiling a 13-7 record in April to sit at 14-13 in league standings.
  • Luke Marbach boasts a 21-game reached base streak, surpassing Steven Rivera-Chijin's 20-game streak earlier this spring.
  • The Islanders rank third in the league in triples (12), as Ryan and Josh Caraway combine for seven of those.
  • Four Islanders – Marbach, Brendan Ryan, Itchy Burts and Mike Williams – are batting above a .300 clip, with Marbach leading with a .347 batting average and six home runs. All of them rank among the conference best, as Marbach's average is fourth-best in the league and .579 slugging is good for fifth, Burt's 52 hits is tied for sixth, Williams in 15th for RBIs and Ryan ties for first with four triples.
  • Hayden Thomas sits among the Southland leaderboards, ranking third in strike outs looking (22) and sixth in overall strikeouts (65). His 3.41 ERA is eighth-best in the league.
  • A&M-Corpus Christi head coach Scott Malone is in his 14th season at the helm of the Islanders and boasts a career record of 339-386-2 and 180-209-2 in Southland play.
Scouting the Opponent
  • The Lumberjacks are coming off a 2-1 series win over Sam Houston last weekend and own a 12-15 conference record.
  • Sean Moore's walk-off RBI single in the tenth inning handed SFA the 5-4 game-two victory over the Bearkats and proved to be the series decider after the fourth game was canceled.
  • Skylar Black leads or ties in several statistical categories for the Lumberjacks including hits (34), RBIs (26), doubles (8), home runs (5) and total bases (59).
