Islanders Win 2021 PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Capping off a wire-to-wire victory, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program won the 2021 PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship after three days of competition at TPC Sawgrass.
 
The Islanders won by 28 strokes with a 928 score. It came after they were in first-place by three strokes after day one and by 24 strokes after day two.
 
It marked just the second time in school history and the first since 2003-04 that A&M-Corpus Christi won two tournaments in the same season. The Islanders were crowned champions at the UTRGV Invitational on March 8-9.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi was guided by a pair of third-place finishes. Sophomore Lucy Martinez recorded a team-best 74 on round three to finish with a 234. It tied junior Kelli Ann Dugan's 234 after she shot a 79 on day three.
 
Just one stroke behind was senior Kellsey Sample and freshman Reese Drezins. The duo tied for fifth with a 235. Sample carded a 79 and Drezins an 80 in the final round.
 
Not far from the pack was freshman Lucie Charbonnier with a 237. All five Islanders placed in the top-seven out of 40 competitors.
 
The PWCC is considered to be the most culturally significant championship in golf and represents Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) from all over the country.

A&M-Corpus Christi finished top-five in six of its last seven meets. It included the 2021 Southland Conference Championship where the Islanders placed fourth - their best finish in 10 years.
