PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – What was a three-stroke lead for first-place heading into Tuesday turned into a 24-stroke lead for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program after round two at the 2021 PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
Â
The Islanders turned in a 314 overall score in round two, which was the best in the field by 17 strokes. A&M-Corpus Christi carries a 616 heading into the final day. Second-place Delaware State shot a 335 in round two and holds a 640 score.
Â
"Overall, I was pleased with our team score today. We were able to increase our lead going into the final day, and that is exciting. However, we left a lot of strokes out there. The Stadium is a little more challenging than Valley; pairing that with the added internal pressure of wanting to play well on such a prestigious course, we had occasional difficulty staying in the moment of each shot. But we did stay patient and kept fighting to get the ball in the hole. Reese, Lucy, and Kelli had solid rounds today," said head coach
Joni Stephens.
Â
Three Islanders are tied for third-place. Freshman
Reese Drezins posted the best day in round two with a 76, which included back-to-back birdies on holes 10 and 11. She's tied with junior
Kelli Ann Dugan who birdied on holes 17 and 18, and freshman
Lucie Charbonnier with 155 apiece. The trio are eight strokes out of first-place and three strokes out of second.
Â
Close behind are senior
Kellsey Sample and sophomore
Lucy Martinez. Sample is in sixth and one stroke behind the threesome with a 156. Four strokes behind her is Martinez with a 160.
Â
All five student-athletes are in the top-seven in a field of 40 student-athletes.
Â
The final round will be played Wednesday.
"Going into tomorrow's round, we have to use better course management on the par 5's and keep the big holes to a minimum," Stephens said. "Our goal is to continue playing with patience, be confident in our decision-making, and commit 100 percent to our shots. Most importantly, to enjoy the experience. We are so appreciative to be competing in this very special tournament on such an amazing golf course."
The PWCC is considered to be the most culturally significant championship in golf and represents Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) from all over the country.Â
