HAMMOND, La. – After a memorable 19-5 finish to the regular season and a walk-off victory in the opening round of the Southland Conference tournament, No. 4 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's season came to an end in a rematch of No. 5 Sam Houston by a 14-2 final Friday at Pat Kennelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Islanders bid farewell to a special senior class including
Itchy Burts,
Luke Marbach,
Mike Williams,
Cole Fluta,
Scott Hastings,
John Gaddis and
Nick Urbantke.
"These players were rock stars on and off the field," said head coach
Scott Malone. "Great baseball players at the highest division level of baseball and even better people. Outstanding mentors and ambassadors of what it means to be a student athlete, this group made an impact on Islander baseball that will be remembered for years to come."
It was all Sam Houston from the beginning, as the scoring brigade kicked off with a Jack Rogers' three-run homer along with a Wes Folse double that chased home two to hand the Bearkats a 5-0 advantage that they would not relinquish.
The Bearkats continued the offensive onslaught, doubling their lead to 10-0 by the top of the third.
After the visitors surged to a 14-0 cushion, All-Southland honoree
Mike Williams put the Islanders on the board via a towering two-run moonshot to right center.
Josh Caraway also added a pair of doubles to the Islanders' six-hit day.
A&M-Corpus Christi earned its highest tournament seed since 2014 and finished the season 25-29, recording a program-best 20 wins in league play.
