CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program couldn't get the bats going Friday and dropped a doubleheader 2-0 and 6-1 to first-place Stephen F. Austin at Chapman Field.
Â
Game one was highlighted by a complete-game by sophomore
Beatriz Lara. She allowed just one earned run in 7.0 frames but didn't get the run support.
Â
In game two, A&M-Corpus Christi (15-21, 6-8 SLC) mustered six hits, including two from freshman
Sydney Hoyt, but the Ladyjacks (23-8, 14-0 SLC) were able to pull away late.
Â
Kassidy Wilbur started twice for SFA and threw 13 innings on the day to grab a pair of wins.
Â
The only run of the day came in the fourth inning of game two for the Islanders. They loaded the bases after singles by junior
Tiler Noyola, freshman
Haley Morse and sophomore
Ashleigh Sgambelluri. A sacrifice fly to left by sophomore
Sammi Thomas brought home Noyola to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Â
Though, SFA was able to create separation with a four-run sixth inning to go up 6-1.
Â
The Islanders used three different arms in game two. Freshman
Megan DePew got the nod and lasted 3.2 innings for a no decision. Freshmen
Audrey McNeill and
Madison Johnson both made relief appearances.
Â
Hoyt tallied her second multi-hit game of the year.
Â
In game one, A&M-Corpus Christi garnered hits from Noyola and Morse.
Â
The doubleheader began a seven-game home stand for the Islanders, who just completed a six-game road swing. The two teams will conclude the series Saturday at noon.
