Tennis Gears Up for Crucial Weekend at UNO, Nicholls; Women Playing for Regular Season Title

NEW ORLEANS – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs will spend the weekend in the state of Louisiana to take on New Orleans and Nicholls.

Due to anticipated rainfall in the area Saturday, both the men and women will play Friday at New Orleans. The women will play at 11 a.m., followed by a 3 p.m. men's match. On Sunday, the women will play Nicholls at 11 a.m. and the men at 1 p.m.

The women (17-2, 8-1 SLC) would clinch the Southland Conference regular season championship with a pair of wins. It won't be easy though as the UNO women (10-2, 8-1 SLC) have nearly just as much at stake. The Privateers have only lost to Sam Houston 4-3, which has created a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard.

It will also be a first-place showdown on the men's side. Even though it's early in the conference schedule for the men, A&M-Corpus Christi (13-4, 1-0 SLC) and UNO (5-2, 2-0 SLC) are the only two unbeaten teams in the SLC standings.

Back on the women's side, the Islanders are coming off a huge 4-3 win over Sam Houston on Tuesday. A&M-Corpus Christi won the doubles point and then showed its depth by taking No. 4, 5 and 6 singles.

Freshmen Emma Aucagne and Leopoldine Boisseau won at No. 4 and 5, respectively. They are both on 10-match winning streaks in singles. Aucagne is 16-1 on the season, while Boisseau is 15-1.

Also with just one loss on the year is sophomore Mariya Shumeika with a 17-1 record at the top spot. Of her 17 wins, 15 have been in straight sets.

As a team, the women are 91-14 (.867) in singles and 41-9 (.820) in doubles. They are 7-1 all-time against UNO and 12-2 all-time against Nicholls.

The A&M-Corpus Christi men will play its first match since March 26 when it defeated Abilene Christian 6-1.

Freshman Pascal Lorieul will put his undefeated singles record on the line as he's a perfect 10-0. He's played everyone from No. 1 to No. 4 in the lineup. Lorieul is also 11-3 in doubles with freshman Carlos Berna Ruiz.

Like the women, the men have shown their depth all season and are 14-0 at No. 4 singles, 12-3 at No. 5 and 10-2 at No. 6. Berna Ruiz and freshman Borja Delgado have mainly played No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively.

The men are a perfect 9-0 all-time against UNO and 16-0 all-time against Nicholls.
