Women’s Tennis Hyped for First-Place Showdown against SHSU

HOUSTON – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program will look to take down the lone unbeaten team in the Southland Conference standings Tuesday when it plays Sam Houston on a neutral court at Rice University at noon.

It's a rescheduled match between A&M-Corpus Christi (16-2, 6-1 SLC) and SHSU (13-2, 8-0 SLC) from March 14 that was postponed due to weather. Since SHSU had already made the trip, by rule, the two teams must meet at a midway destination.

"Sam Houston is a team we have great respect for. These are the battles this team has trained all year for. I believe our team has worked incredibly hard and earned the right to be confident in these moments. That will be the case for every match moving forward the rest of the year. This team has earned the right to be confident and now we just have to play every present point tough and smart. And that's really the difference. All eight girls. That will be the difference – who plays every present point with intensity versus who plays 8 out of 10. I love the character of this team and I know how passionately committed they are to that process," said head coach Steve Moore.

The Islanders are 88-11 (.889) in singles and 39-8 (.830) in doubles on the year.

At the top spot, sophomore Mariya Shumeika is undefeated with a perfect 17-0 record. Of her 17 wins, 15 have been in straight sets.

Freshmen Emma Aucagne and Leopoldine Boisseau are both on nine-match winning-streaks. Aucagne is 15-1 on the season at No. 4, while Boisseau is 14-1 at No. 5.

A&M-Corpus Christi is coming off a 6-1 victory over Lamar on Saturday. The Islanders won the doubles point before taking five of six singles matches. Sophomore Camille Townsend pulled out a three-setter 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 at No. 2 over Elena Rodriguez.

SHSU has not lost a match since Jan. 31 at North Texas 4-1. The Bearkats have found ways to win a lot of close matches in conference and are coming off a 4-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin over the weekend.

A&M-Corpus Christi is 11-8 all-time against the Bearkats.

If the Islanders win their final four matches against SHSU, New Orleans, Incarnate Word and Nicholls they would win the regular season championship.
