Islanders Take Southland Break Tuesday to Face No. 4 Texas

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball returns to Austin to face No. 4 Texas in another midweek matchup on Tuesday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m. inside UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

Islander Notes
  • Home runs have highlighted the Islanders' spring, as A&M-Corpus Christi shares the second-best Southland total alongside Sam Houston with 17. Freshman Nick Mueller belted a three-run blast in game two against New Orleans for the Islanders lone long ball of the four-game set.
  • Mike Williams, Itchy Burts and Josh Caraway led the offensive charge for the Islanders against New Orleans, combining for 15 of the home club's 29 series hits. Willliams' pair of game-one singles earned him four of his six RBIs of the series and accounted for all of the Islanders runs in the 5-4 final.
  • Scoring all six of their runs in the final two frames, the Islanders took advantage of New Orleans pitching generosity with three-straight walks and a hit by pitch that scored two before a Burts single and Willams sacrifice fly plated the difference-making tallies for the 6-4 victory. 
  • Hayden Thomas' 3.32 ERA through seven starts ranks among the top-10 in the Southland, with his 50 strikeouts and 17 caught looking being third best among league pitchers.
  • Steven Rivera-Chijin extended his reached-base streak to 20 games with two runs scored in the weekend series against the Privateers. 
  • Burts tallied five hits and drove in two runs against New Orleans, upping his hitting streak to five and amassing a team-high nine multi-hit games. 
  • The Islander offense exploded for a season-high 12 runs and 14 hits to claim a game-two, 12-6 victory over Sam Houston during the Saturday doubleheader.
  • After a stellar showing at the Shriners College Classic, senior Mike Williams was tabbed to the All-Tournament team after he batted .375 over the three-game tournament and tallied a hit in all three contests including a monster two-RBI home run in the Saturday showing against Rice that afforded the Islanders an early 2-0 advantage.
  • A&M-Corpus Christi head coach Scott Malone is in his 14th season at the helm of the Islanders and boasts a career record of 328-383-2 and 169-207-2 in Southland play.
  • Luke Marbach collected Southland Hitter of the Week honors on Feb. 23 after belting five hits that included two doubles and a long ball that helped drive home four runs.
Scouting the Opponent
  • The Longhorns have risen to a No. 4 national ranking since its last meeting with the Islanders on March 2, beginning a dominant month-long stretch that has seen them claim 17 of their last 21 outings for a 20-8 overall record.
  • Redshirt sophomore Ivan Melendez was named Big-12 Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week after hitting at a .615 clip and launching three doubles and a homer in the series sweep at Kansas. 
  • Tuesday's contest kicks off a 10-game homestand for the Longhorns at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
