Women’s Tennis Bounces Back with 6-1 Statement Win over Lamar

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's tennis program wrapped-up the weekend with a big 6-1 win over Lamar on Saturday at the Henry Tennis Center.

The Islanders (16-2, 6-1 SLC) cruised to a pair of doubles victory at courts No. 1 and 3 before winning four singles matches in straight sets to clinch it over Lamar (7-6, 4-4 SLC).

"We talked a lot about how character is defined and how you bounce back after a tough loss, and this group was superb today! They came out and really competed with great heart and pride! We have big battles coming up where we will need to play with this level intensity plus savvy and smart! We have to play that way 10 points out of 10, every player from the start to finish. But we have great belief in this group! They care as much as you could ask a team to care and have great character," said head coach Steve Moore.

A&M-Corpus Christi started it off in doubles with a 6-2 win from sophomore Camille Townsend and Mariya Shumeika. The clinching match came on court three where freshmen Leopoldine Boisseau and Kateryna Rublevska won by the same 6-2 score.

In singles, freshman Victoire Delattre made quick work of Emmeline Polevoi 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 to put the Islanders up 2-0.

Remaining undefeated on the year was Shumeika who improved to 17-0 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles.

Both Boisseau and freshman Emma Aucagne won their ninth consecutive singles matches. Boisseau took down Ana Jolic 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5, while Aucagne ousted Natalia Molina 7-5, 6-1.

A back-and-forth match came at No. 2 singles where Townsend outlasted Elena Rodriguez 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.

A&M-Corpus Christi improved to 11-9 all-time against the Cardinals and have won eight of the last nine.

The Islanders will take the court again Tuesday in a huge showdown against first-place Sam Houston at 12 p.m. on a neutral site in Houston. It's a make-up match from a weather postponement on March 14.
