Baseball Splits Twin Bill with New Orleans

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball split its doubleheader with conference foe New Orleans, as a three-run surge in extras fell short to hand the Privateers a 7-6 nail biter in game one before the Islanders notched its first win of the series in the nightcap with a 6-4 final Friday at Chapman Field.

Game 1 - New Orleans 7, A&M-Corpus Christi 6 (8 inn.)

A three-run homer from Nick Mueller nearly wiped out a four-run New Orleans edge in the eighth, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fell one-run short in a 7-6 extra-innings affair.

The Islanders held a 3-1 lead until the sixth, as New Orleans capitalized on a walk and wild pitch to move Pearce Howard into scoring position before a S. Iza single brought the tying run home. In the final home half, the Islanders threatened after an error and sacrifice bunt put Mueller at second but two quick outs squashed the walk-off hopes.

New Orleans used a three-hit, four-run eighth punctuated by two-run homer to take the lead and managed to barely hang on after the Mueller answered in dramatic fashion with his own three-run blast.

Game 2 - A&M-Corpus Christi 6, New Orleans 4

The Islanders scored all six of their runs in the final two frames, as a 4-0 New Orleans lead gave way to a 6-4 A&M-Corpus Christi final that solidified the come-from-behind, game-two victory.

A leadoff Josh Caraway bunt set the table for a decisive four-run inning, getting aboard before New Orleans handed out three-straight walks and a hit by pitch to help Caraway and Brandon Petkoff walk home and make it an even 4-4 ballgame.

With bases loaded, Itchy Burts whacked a single up the middle and Mike Williams gave up the sacrifice fly to plate the difference-making tallies and stretch the Islander lead to 6-4 before Tyler Miller retired the Privateers in order to preserve the win.

Miller (1-2) earned his first winning appearance of the season as he only allowed one hit through 2.2 innings.

Islanders and Privateers conclude the series Saturday, April 3 with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
