EL DORADO, Ark. – There was no movement in the team leaderboard Tuesday for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program as it started and ended the day in fifth-place at the 2021 Southland Conference Championships at Mystic Creek Golf Club.
After the second of three rounds, the Islanders are 57 strokes out of first-place. A&M-Corpus Christi carded a 331 on Tuesday after submitting a 327 on Monday for a 658 overall score.
"We fought hard today to bring in a better score. Hitting greens is essential for a good score on this course. The pin locations were brutal today, and we had difficulty keeping the ball on the green. Our golfers hit a lot of well-executed shots that did not turn out well because of the undulation and speed of the greens, and subsequently turned into big numbers. Because of that, we struggled to maintain confidence in our shot-making decisions and did not bounce back from the trouble holes like we usually do," said head coach
Joni Stephens.
Freshman
Lucie Charbonnier has stood out individually. She's top-five on the individual leaderboard after improving upon her round one score of 78 with a round two score of 75. Her 153 overall tally is 12 strokes out of first-place.
"
Lucie Charbonnier was the bright spot today - she had another good round, hitting 14 greens and having nothing higher than a bogie. I'm so pleased to see her so high on the leaderboard," Stephens said.
Sophomore
Lucy Martinez is in 18th-place with a 162. She's followed by senior
Kellsey Sample and junior
Kelli Ann Dugan who are tied with 173 scores. Freshman
Reese Drezins improved her round one score by seven strokes and carries a 175.
"Tomorrow is our final day, and we are determined to conquer this course. These scores are not indicative of the capability of this team, and we know that. We have one more round - new day, new opportunities, new results," Stephens said.
A&M-Corpus Christi has been accustomed to posting its best score on the final day. This season, it turned in its best round in the final round in four of six meets.
The Southland champion will earn the conference's automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Regionals. Additionally, the individual champion, if not a part of the championship team, will be granted an automatic selection into the NCAA Regional Tournament. Qualifiers from the NCAA Regional Tournaments will earn a spot in the NCAA Women's Golf Championship, which will be hosted at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, May 21-26.
