SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore
Beatriz Lara threw a complete-game shutout to headline a 1-0 victory for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program over Incarnate Word in the series finale Friday at H-E-B Field.
Lara earned her 10th win of the season for the Islanders (15-18, 6-6 SLC) after keeping the Cardinals (8-16, 4-8 SLC) off the scoreboard. It was her fourth shutout of the year.
The only run of the game came in the fifth inning. After a double by junior
Tiler Noyola, sophomore
Ashleigh Sgambelluri knocked in a two out hit to center to bring home the run.
Sgambelluri has registered a hit in 13 of the last 14 games.
Lara worked herself out of jams all game and stranded at least one runner on base in every inning.
In the seventh, UIW got on base with a leadoff walk and the runner advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Though, Lara kept the door shut with a strikeout and a ground out to second to end the game.
A&M-Corpus Christi is now 10-8 all-time against Incarnate Word and 5-4 on the road.
The Islanders will wrap-up their seven-game road trip Tuesday when they travel for a doubleheader at Prairie View A&M beginning at 2 p.m.
