CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball makes a midweek stop at UTRGV for a South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union, rivalry on Tuesday, April 20 at 6 p.m.
Islander Notes
- The Islanders aim to continue their winning ways after claiming their second-straight Southland series with a four-game sweep of Central Arkansas, extending the win streak to five straight and seven of their last eight league matchups.
- Junior John Gaddis tossed his second complete-game effort in a 5-1 game three victory against the Bears, going the distance in a 7.0 inning outing with six scoreless frames and four strikeouts.
- Senior Mike Williams paced the Islanders with a six-hit weekend, none bigger then the three-run walkoff bomb delivered in the bottom of the 12th to hand the home club the 7-4 extra inning thriller. He carries a five-game hitting and 11-game reached base streaks into the midweek contest.
- Luke Marbach stands in an eight-way tie for seventh in the Southland in doubles with nine while Josh Caraway is in a four-way deadlock at second with three triples.
- Senior trio Itchy Burts (14), Luke Marbach (13) and Mike Williams (11) carry 10+ reached-base stretches while Williams and Brendan Ryan each have five-game hitting streaks on the line going into Tuesday's non-conference battle.
- Hayden Thomas sits among the Southland leaderboards, ranking second in strike outs looking (20) and fourth in overall strikeouts (59). His 3.18 ERA is eighth-best in the league.
- Strong weekend performances in back-to-back series wins ties Williams for eighth in the league in homers (5) and 10th in RBIs (29), with both totals also leading the Islander squad.
- A&M-Corpus Christi head coach Scott Malone is in his 14th season at the helm of the Islanders and boasts a career record of 334-382-2 and 175-205-2 in Southland play.
Scouting the Opponent
- UTRGV is 16-17 overall and an even 8-8 in conference play heading into the midweek, as the Vaqueros haven't taken the field since a 6-2 win in extras against Utah Valley on April 11.
- UTRGV earned its first WAC series victory by taking three out of four from Utah Valley, winning game one 6-1, game two 5-4 (7) and game four 6-2 (10) while dropping game three 6-5 (11). Two of UTRGV's three extra-inning games this season came in the series.
