CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program clinched at least a share of the Southland Conference regular season title with a 6-1 win over Incarnate Word on Wednesday at the Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders (16-4, 4-0 SLC) can clinch the SLC regular season title outright and the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament with a win over Lamar at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Henry Tennis Center.
"Today was a big-time battle and a lot closer than the score! I thought our guys really rose-up today and fought with great heart and courage! They take a lot of pride in this conference and playing in front of the great Corpus Christi community! They were a family of fighters and they fought for each other today," said head coach
Steve Moore. "Tomorrow will be a very special Senior Day for a very special senior

A&M-Corpus Christi (16-4, 4-0 SLC) earned the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. At the top spot, the team of junior
Kyohei Yamanaka and freshman
Ryuya Ata jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 6-2 decision. Yamanaka and Ata improved to 4-0 in conference.
The clinching match came at No. 3 doubles where freshmen
Borja Delgado and
Carlos Berna Ruiz raced out to a 4-0 lead and finished it off 6-3.
In singles, freshman
Pascal Lorieul remained undefeated and is now a perfect 13-0 (4-0 SLC) on the year. He tallied his fifth consecutive straight set win with a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 4.
Yamanaka and Delgado both improved to 4-0 in conference. Yamanaka grinded out a come-from-behind win 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 at No. 1. Delgado won in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5.
At the No. 2 spot, Ata outlasted Joao Sasso in a back-and-forth battle 6-4, 6-7, 10-8. On the court next to him, freshman
Nathan Schwartz cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3.
A&M-Corpus Christi is now 7-1 all-time against the Cardinals and has never lost to them at home.
The Islanders will wrap-up the regular season tomorrow and it will be Senior Day for
Chad Nguyen. Men's tennis will be going for its 11th SLC regular season title and 19th championship overall.
