CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – With an opportunity to win the 2021 regular season championship, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program will host Incarnate Word at 1 p.m. Wednesday and Lamar at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Henry Tennis Center.
Thursday will be Senior Day as the Islanders (15-4, 3-0 SLC) honor
Chad Nguyen. He's the only Texas native on the roster and hails from College Station. Nguyen is 5-0 in singles this year and 10-2 in doubles.
As a team, A&M-Corpus Christi would clinch the SLC regular season title outright with wins over both UIW (4-7, 1-2 SLC) and Lamar (10-7, 3-1 SLC).
"These are our final two home matches of the year and I know our team is extremely excited. There's a lot on the line and this team has worked extremely hard and earned the right to be confident for these moments," said head coach
Steve Moore. "Senior day will be incredibly special for Chad. He's poured his heart and soul into this team and is beloved by his coaches and teammates. So, this is a great chance to honor him and all he's brought to Islanders tennis."
Freshman
Pascal Lorieul is looking to complete an undefeated season. He's a perfect 12-0 (3-0 SLC) in singles, including four consecutive straight-set wins over Nicholls, New Orleans, Abilene Christian and UTSA.
Unbeaten in conference are junior
Kyohei Yamanaka and freshman
Borja Delgado. Yamanaka is 7-3 on the season at No. 1 singles, while Delgado is 11-1 primarily at No. 6.
Yamanaka is also undefeated in doubles in conference. Along with freshman
Ryuya Ata, the duo have won all three league matches at the No. 2 spot.
The Islanders are 6-1 all-time against UIW and 17-3 against Lamar. A&M-Corpus Christi has never lost to either of them at home.
