Softball Surrenders Late Leads in Doubleheader at UIW

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program led after six innings in game one and after five innings in game two before Incarnate Word came back to take 5-4 and 6-3 decisions on Thursday at H-E-B Field.
 
Junior Tiler Noyola went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run in game one, and sophomore Pal Egan was 2-for-2 with a run to highlight the offense. In game two, freshman Sydney Hoyt and freshman Alexandria Torres each went 2-for-3 at the dish.
 
The Islanders (14-18, 5-6 SLC) scored in their very first at-bat of the day. It came on an infield single by Hoyt to score Noyola.
 
A&M-Corpus Christi increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth. The three run inning included an RBI double by junior Tiare Lee and RBI singles by Torres and Noyola.
 
UIW (8-15, 4-7 SLC) started chipping away with a run in both the fifth and sixth to make it a 4-2 game.
 
In the seventh, the Cardinals capitalized on two errors and garnered a game-winning hit by Jazmine Torres on a walk-off.
 
Sophomore Beatriz Lara allowed just one run in 5.0 innings and was given a no decision. She struck out five batters.
 
In game two, the Islanders erased a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the fifth. It came on six hits including a two RBI single by Egan and a go-ahead knock by Lee.
 
However, similar to game one, UIW had extra opportunities late and cashed-in with a four run sixth inning to jump ahead 6-3.
 
The Islanders used four pitchers in the game. Freshman Megan DePew made the start and settled for a no decision after throwing 3.1 frames. Freshman Madison Johnson, Hoyt and freshman Audrey McNeill all made appearances in relief.
 
Sophomore Ashleigh Sgambelluri saw her 11-game hitting streak and 15-game reached base streak come to an end in game one, but tallied a hit and a run in game two.
 
 
A&M-Corpus Christi is now 9-8 all-time against Incarnate Word and 4-4 on the road.
 
The Islanders and Cardinals will conclude the series Saturday at noon.
