CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis program will return to the court Wednesday when it battles UTRGV in the South Texas Showdown at 2 p.m. at the Henry Tennis Center.
The South Texas Showdown, an all-sports competition between A&M-Corpus Christi and
UTRGV, is presented by
NavyArmy Community Credit Union. As an institution, the Islanders lead the series 3-1. The Islanders lead this year's standings 25.5-16.5.
The Islanders (11-2) are going for the season sweep over the Vaqueros (3-9). A&M-Corpus Christi swept UTRGV 7-0 in Edinburg in Feb. 9, and won again over the Vaqueros 4-1 at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions on Feb. 21.
"Our team loves the South Texas Showdown, the rivalry, the intensity, the energy is fantastic. I think they want the chance to play for our University and our community, and the South Texas Showdown is an awesome opportunity," said head coach
Steve Moore.
A&M-Corpus Christi is 54-12 in singles and 29-7 in doubles as a team.
Freshman
Pascal Lorieul is a perfect 7-0 in singles in the middle of the lineup, while freshman
Carlos Berna Ruiz is 9-1. The two also team together and are 10-1 in doubles at the No. position.
At the top of the lineup, junior
Kyohei Yamanaka and freshman
Ryuya Ata have paired together for a 6-2 record at No. 1 doubles and have been the team's No. 1 and 2 singles players.
Men's tennis is 20-3 all-time against UTRGV and have won 16 consecutive meetings.
