CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball continues its non-conference gauntlet with a midweek meeting against SEC-member Texas A&M in College Station Tuesday, March 9 with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch inside Blue Bell Park.
Islander Notes
- The Islanders made their program debut at the prestigious Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic, highlighted by a 4-3 battle with No. 10 Texas Tech in the series finale that saw an Itchy Burts homer combined with a two-run ninth to nearly knock off the Red Raiders.
- Hayden Thomas tacked on another masterful mound performance against No. 10 Texas Tech, fanning 11 in 6.2 innings and bringing his combined total to 23 in his last two starts.
- Home runs spotlighted the Islanders offense in the final two games of the College Classic, as Mike Williams, Justin Taylor, and Burts each lifted one to the Minute Maid Park stands that accounted for five of the Islanders eight runs.
- The Islanders claimed the series opener against Houston in the Kleberg Bank College Classic, using seven innings of scoreless ball and a combined 10 strikeouts combined with a decisive two-run third to take a 3-1 victory and hand the Cougars their first setback of the spring.
- Pitchers Leo Perez and Daniel Nelson combined for eight of the Islanders' 10 strikeouts against the Cougars as pair kept the opposition scoreless through 7.2 innings in the opener win.
- A&M-Corpus Christi kept it close in the series finale, holding a two-run advantage in the eighth but Houston responded by scoring in the final three innings to send it to extras and deliver the final blow in a 4-3, 10-inning heartbreaker.
- Through the opening two series, Leo Markotic tops the hits column with eight for the Islanders, racking up four in the home series against Houston.
- In their first series of 2021, A&M-Corpus Christi's pitching contingent held the Chippewas to 23 scoreless frames over the three-game set, led by starter Henry Bird's 5.0 innings of hitless and scoreless ball that saw him fan four batters in a 5-1 rout in the mound victory.
- A&M-Corpus Christi head coach Scott Malone is in his 14th season at the helm of the Islanders and boasts a career record of 326-370-2 and 167-198-2 in Southland play.
- Luke Marbach collected Southland Hitter of the Week honors on Feb. 23 after belting five hits that included two doubles and a long ball that helped drive home four runs.
Scouting the Opponent
- Texas A&M carries a 9-4 record entering the midweek, riding a five-game Blue Bell Park win streak dating back to March 2.
- The Aggies are 2-1 against fellow Southland members, as ACU handed Texas A&M its third loss of the season with a 6-5 setback on Feb. 23. A&M went on to outscore HBU and Incarnate Word by a 10-4 margin.
- A&M-Corpus Christi visits the Aggies in the midst of a 10-game home stand running from March 2-14 and including oppoenets HBU, Incarnate Word, New Mexico State, Prairie View A&M, and Samford.
