HOUSTON, Texas – A tremendous 31-point fourth-quarter Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball comeback effort fell just shy as Houston Baptist escaped with a 78-70 victory and Southland tournament bid Saturday afternoon at Sharp Gym.
Heading into the final stanza trailing 58-41, the Islanders mounted its best quarter offense all season in a last-ditch effort at a postseason bid as
Makinna Serrata and
Nabaweeyah McGill combined for 18 pivotal points over the final 10 minutes. The Islanders managed to trim the deficit to single digits for the first time since the first quarter after an
Olivia Dowden steal resulted in a Serrata fast break making it 67-58 with 3:26 on the clock.
The Islanders continued its offensive barrage, as McGill hit her most important shot of the night with a long-range three to draw the visitors within five, 73-68, with a minute left. The difference proved to much as HBU sank three back-breaking free throws to put the victory just out of reach.
HBU overwhelmed the Islanders from the start, jumping out to a 21-9 edge that eventually ballooned to a 21-point Huskies' lead midway through the third while shooting at a 48 percent clip in the opening half.
A&M-Corpus Christi had four players – Serrata (17),
Paige Allen (16),
Alecia Westbrook (10), and McGill (11) – enter the double-figure scoring column in the season finale while
Giana Wright chipped in a team-high seven rebounds. McGill's 11-point production was good for a career best, with nine of those coming in the fourth-quarter explosion.
The Islanders finish the 2020-21 season with a 6-13 overall record and finishing 4-7 in Southland play.
