A&M-Corpus Christi Goes Toe-to-Toe with No. 23 Iowa State

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program battled tough in a 6-3 defeat to No. 23 Iowa State on Saturday in the final game of the UTA Invitational at Allan Saxe Field.

The Islanders (7-8) held three leads in the game. They were up 1-0 after one, 2-1 after two and 3-2 after three before ISU (16-2) rallied late.

With a pair of walks, sophomore Pal Egan has reached base safely in all 15 games this season. For the tournament, Egan was 7-for-14 (.500) with a .588 on-base percentage over five games.

Freshman Alexandria Torres also had a big tournament. In four starts, she finished 6-for-10 (.600) at the plate with a pair of walks for a .667 on-base percentage. Torres was 2-for-3 with a run scored today against the Cyclones.

Also with a hit in the game was sophomore MacKenzie Purcell who also drove in a run and walked twice.

The Islanders got on the board in their first at-bat. After back-to-back walks started the game, an RBI single to right by sophomore Beatriz Lara gave them the 1-0 lead.

A&M-Corpus Christi extended it to 2-0 in the second. Freshman Gabriella Torres was hit by a pitch to start the frame, advanced to second on a walk and scored on an error.

After ISU got one back, the Islanders made it a 3-1 game in the third. It came on an RBI single by Purcell, which scored Alexandria Torres who singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.

Though, the Cyclones answered with one in the third to trim it to 3-2, and took the 4-3 lead in the fourth after a pair of runs. ISU added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth to go up 6-3.

A&M-Corpus Christi had an opportunity to do damage in the top of the sixth after it placed runners on second and third with one out. However, after a ground ball to short, ISU gunned down a runner at the plate and then forced another ground out to escape the inning.

The Islanders will be tested again when they travel to Texas for a 6 p.m. game Wednesday.
