Softball Puts Up Good Fight at No. 10 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, but 10th-ranked Texas held on for a 10-6 decision Wednesday at Red & Charline McCombs Field.

A&M-Corpus Christi (7-9) trailed 10-3 in the seventh to Texas (11-2) when it started to make things interesting. Junior Kennedy Jimenez led off with a hit, and the Islanders soon loaded the bases after an error and a walk. Junior Tiler Noyola walked with the bases loaded and sophomore Sammi Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 10-5 game.

The Islanders re-loaded the bases and drew another RBI walk from freshman Haley Morse to trim it to 10-6. Though, with two outs, Ariana Adams came in for the Longhorns and was credited a save after ending the game on a strikeout.

A&M-Corpus Christi has now outscored the opposition 12-1 in the seventh inning this year.

The Islanders tallied eight hits in the game including two from Jimenez, Noyola and sophomore Pal Egan. Thomas and sophomore Ashleigh Sgambelluri knocked hits as well.

Egan extended her on-base streak to 16 games, which is every game this season. She submitted her team-high fifth multi-hit game of the year.

All of A&M-Corpus Christi's other three runs came in the third inning. They came on an RBI single up the middle by Thomas, and a two RBI rip to center by Sgambelluri. It cut the deficit to 4-3 at the time.

Freshman Audrey McNeill got the start in the circle, while sophomore Beatriz Lara, sophomore Jenika Lombrana and freshman Megan DePew all made appearances in relief.

It was the third ranked opponent from the Big 12 that the Islanders have faced this year after previously going up against No. 11 Oklahoma State twice and No. 23 Iowa State.

A&M-Corpus Christi will begin conference play this weekend when it hosts Sam Houston for a three-game series at Chapman Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader Friday beginning at 12 p.m.
