A&M-Corpus Christi Finishes Sixth at SHSU Bearkat Invitational

Full Results | Day One Release

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Posting its best score on the final day, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi started and ended the day in sixth-place out of 11 teams Tuesday at Raven Nest Golf Club.

The Islanders carded a 306 in the final round. They got better as the tournament went along after tallying a 318 in round one and 308 in round two for a 932 overall score.

It marked the fourth time in five meets this spring that A&M-Corpus Christi recorded its strongest score in round three.

A top-10 showing came from senior Kellsey Sample. After a 75 in round one and 77 in round two, Sample turned in a big final day with a 70 for a 222 total.

"We played better today, led by Kellsey's first college sub-par round and the third low 18-hole score of the tournament. I am so proud of her composure during today's round - she played with such patience and confidence, and she made some important putts for birdie and to save par. I was also proud of Kelli's effort - she had a better rhythm to her game today and brought in a good score. Reese also brought in a solid score, recovering nicely after a big number early in her round. Unfortunately, our fourth and fifth scores were not where we needed them to be to move up the leaderboard," said head coach Joni Stephens.

Freshman Reese Drezins submitted a top-25 finish with an 80-76-78—234 total. Sophomore Lucy Martinez was the team's third finisher with an 85-74-82—241.

Another solid final round came from junior Kelli Ann Dugan who ended with an 81-85-76—242. Freshman Lucie Charbonnier rounded it out with an 82-81-82—245.

Competing as an individual was sophomore Mackenzie Fee who was third among 12 individuals and 26th overall in the leaderboard. She submitted a 77-79-80—236.

"I saw some traces of fatigue during this tournament. We are at that time in the semester when classes are coming to an end, we have been traveling a lot competing, and we are gearing up for our conference championship. We are going to spend the next few days resting up as well as focusing on some weak areas from this tournament, before heading to Lamar on Saturday," Stephens said.

The Islanders will have one more regular season meet before the conference championships as they compete in the Lamar Cardinal Challenge on April 5-6.
