HUNTSVILLE, Texas – For the second consecutive tournament, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program will look to make its move on the final day as it currently sits in sixth out of 11 at the SHSU Bearkat Invitational at Raven Nest Golf Club.
The Islanders carded a 318 in round one Monday, but improved by 10 shots for a 308 in round two for a 626 total.
A&M-Corpus Christi is 44 strokes behind the host Sam Houston for first-place, but only five strokes behind McNeese for a top-five finish.
"Today was a struggle - we just did not play with the same energy and intensity that we normally have. Kellsey, Kenzie and Reese played pretty consistently, and were close to having really good rounds. Lucy made a good comeback on her second round. Unfortunately, we had too many holes that got away from us and caused big numbers. We had a good round coming in on the second eighteen, but gave away too many shots in our last three holes," said head coach
Joni Stephens.
Senior
Kellsey Sample leads the squad with a 75-77—152, which is good for 17th-place. Right behind her is freshman
Reese Drezins with an 80-76—156.
The low round for the team came from junior
Lucy Martinez. After an 85 in round one, she bounced back with a 74 in round two for a 159 total.
Freshman
Lucie Charbonnier and junior
Kelli Ann Dugan scored a 82-81—163 and 81-85—166, respectively.
Competing as an individual, sophomore
Mackenzie Fee recorded a 77-79—156 and is in 22nd.
"Tomorrow we have stay intentional and energized throughout the round, do a better job off the tee, be more confident in our approach club choices, and make more putts from 10 feet in," Stephens said.
Day two of the tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. The Islanders have had a knack for moving up on the final day. Most recently, they went from seventh to fifth in the HBU Husky Invitational in their last tournament.
