CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A late homer by McNeese in the opening game swung the momentum for the entire day Friday as the Cowgirls grabbed game one 3-2 in nine innings and game two 6-1 over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program at Chapman Field.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi (14-13, 5-3 SLC) led 2-0 over McNeese (13-18, 4-4 SLC) with two outs in the seventh inning when Jil Poullard hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to tie the game. The Cowgirls scored one in the ninth and held on for the victory.
Â
The Islanders were one out away from their sixth consecutive shutout. They set a program record with five straight clean sheets coming into the contest. It was the first time in 13 tries this year that A&M-Corpus Christi fell after leading after four innings.
Â
With a hit in each game, sophomore
Ashleigh Sgambelluri extended her hitting streak to eight games and her reached base streak to 12 games. Freshman
Alie Alcantar also notched a hit in each contest and is now on a seven-game hitting streak.
Â
Sophomore
Pal Egan submitted two multi-hit games and finished 4-for-8 on the day. She's etched seven multi-hit games on the year.
Â
In game one, the Islanders got on the board in the second inning on a double steal play. Freshman
Gabriella Torres took off for second, drew a throw and Egan swiped home.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi added on with a run in the third to go up 2-0. After Alcantar led it off with a single up the middle, she stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Sammi Thomas. She scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Sgambelluri.
Â
Sophomore
Beatriz Lara was cruising through six innings until a couple keys plays didn't go her way. An error on a dropped ball at first base gave the Cowgirls hope, and Poullard capitalized on a homer to right field on a full count.
Â
Lara threw 8.1 innings and only allowed one earned run. Freshman
Audrey McNeill recorded the final two outs, including a strikeout.
Â
In game two, the Islanders scored their only run in the seventh. Sgambelluri hit an RBI single, which scored Thomas.
Â
Sophomore
Jenika Lombrana gave up three runs in 4.2 innings but didn't get the run support. McNeill and freshman
Megan DePew both made appearances out of the bullpen.
Â
The Islanders and Cowgirls will close out the series Saturday at 12 p.m. at Chapman Field.
