Soccer Battles Hard against Texas

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Tied at 0-0 at the half, Texas was able to break through in the second for a 3-0 decision over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program Friday at Dugan Stadium.

The Islanders (4-7-2) had several good opportunities to score on the Longhorns (6-5) but just couldn't put the finishing touch on their chances.

"I'm really proud of the ladies tonight, it could have easily been 3-3 on a different day. I'm most proud of the fact we didn't play scared and took the game to them," said head coach Craig Shaw.

Senior Kayla Gove had a couple of looks – one in each half, but the Texas goalkeeper Savannah Madden was able to make a couple of great plays to keep the ball from reaching the back of the net.

A&M-Corpus Christi totaled five shots in the game with all of them on target. Freshman Natalie Gonzalez nearly broke through in the first half, but another big save by Madden kept it scoreless. Senior Abby Deakin and junior Siri O'Donnell also fired shots.

Junior Siri O'Donnell and freshman Emma Herrera who played all 90 minutes on the back line.

Texas didn't score until the 58th minute after a cross from Sydney Nobles connected with Julia Grosso who finished in the center of the box. The Longhorns also garnered goals from Mackenzie McFarland and Cameron Brooks in the 65th and 84th minute, respectively.

It was just the second-ever time that Texas came to town in soccer after a meeting in 2014.

Friday marked the finale of a program-long seven-game home stand. The Islanders will have Sunday off from competition and return to the pitch Thursday, April 1 from conference action at Nicholls at 3 p.m.
