Men’s & Women’s Tennis Head to ACU for Key SLC Matches

ABILENE, Texas - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's & women's tennis programs will go back to work Friday when they travel to Abilene Christian for matches beginning at 11 a.m. at the Eager Tennis Center.

It will be the first match in eight days for the men (12-4, 0-0 SLC) and the first in 14 days for the women (14-1, 4-0 SLC) after a postponement. It will be the conference opener for the men.

"Abilene is always very, very tough at home so we have to come in focused and committed to play each present point tough and smart. I told the team this final stretch of conference is all about the hard work they've put in since September. You either earned the right to be confident or you didn't with your hard work and discipline over the past seven months! And this team has definitely earned that right to be confident and deserves great belief because they've worked incredibly hard! So, we go in focusing on what we can control and believing in ourselves and each other," said head coach Steve Moore.

The women's program has only dropped one court in four SLC matches with 7-0 wins over Northwestern State, McNeese and Stephen F. Austin, and a 6-1 victory over Southeastern Louisiana.

On the season, the women are 75-6 (.926) in singles and 35-4 (.897) in doubles.

Sophomore Mariya Shumeika is undefeated in singles, playing at the No. 1 and 2 positions. She's one of two Islanders who are still unbeaten along with freshman Victoire Delattre who is 12-0 at No. 6.

In doubles, the freshman duo of Emma Aucagne and Emma Honore are 12-1 at the No. 2 spot and have won 10 in a row. Delattre and freshman Leopoldine Boisseau are 9-1 together at No. 3.

On the men's side, the Islanders are 61-18 (.772) in singles and 31-11 (.738) in doubles.

Freshman Pascal Lorieul has stood out as of late and carries a perfect 9-0 singles record. He's coming off a 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles against Kai Breitbach from UTSA.

The ACU women (9-9, 4-2 SLC) are coming off a 6-1 win over Nicholls. They have non-conference wins over UTSA and Wichita State. The men (6-10, 1-1 SLC) fell to New Orleans 6-1 to begin SLC action but responded with a 5-2 victory over Nicholls.

Both the A&M-Corpus Christi men and women have won three of the last four matches against ACU. The Islanders and Wildcats did not play each other in 2020 due to the shortened COVID-19 season. In 2019, the A&M-Corpus Christi men beat ACU 4-3 in finals of the SLC Championships to advance to the NCAA Championships for the eighth time.
