CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas –
A stalemate was broken in the 105th minute when Sam Houston scored the lone tally in a 1-0 decision over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program in double overtime Sunday at Dugan Stadium.

The score for the Bearkats (3-4-1, 3-4-1 SLC) against the Islanders (4-6-2, 3-4-1 SLC) came off a corner kick. The ball took a high bounce in the center of the box, and through a scrum SHSU's Brooke Jones got just enough of a foot on it to poke it into the lower right corner of the net.

"We didn't take our chances today and when you let lesser teams stay in the game these kinds of results happen. The team knows how to deal with adversity and we will bounce back again," said head coach Craig Shaw.

The Islanders had several opportunities on the day. In the first half, freshman Natalie Gonzalez intercepted a goal kick and fired a shot in the box on the fast-break, but SHSU goalkeeper Abby DeLozier was able to make a play on it.

In the second half, senior Kayla Gove nearly scored the game-winner in the 76th minute after a run through the right, but DeLozier kept the game scoreless by blocking a low shot.

Just 11 seconds into overtime, senior Abby Deakin found space near the top of the box and squared up a missile that the keeper had to make a diving save on to her right, and the ball bounced away from danger.

A&M-Corpus Christi had one last opportunity in the first overtime. After senior Larissa Fagundes gained possession in the center of the box, she went down hard after a challenge, but no call was awarded and the referee signaled to play on.

Freshman Olivia Alvarez recorded a game-high four shots, including three on net. Eight different Islanders took a shot in the contest.

Senior Kyleigh Hall made seven saves in net to keep the game scoreless and was aided by junior Siri O'Donnell and freshman Emma Herrera who played the full 105 minutes on defense.

A&M-Corpus Christi will conclude its program-long seven-game home stand Friday when it hosts the Texas Longhorns at 7 p.m. at Dugan Stadium.
