CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball stormed out of the gates and withstood a late Houston Baptist push to down the visiting club 50-43 and pick up its third-consecutive win Monday evening at the Dugan Wellness Center.
Makinna Serrata paced all scorers with a 16-point and was accompanied by 10-point efforts from
Hayle Campbell and
Alecia Westbrook to complete the home club's double-figure trio. In addition, Serrata and Westbrook each corralled eight boards to lead the team in a tight defensive battle while Westbrook also dished out five helpers.
After an
Alexandria Pollard layup evened the contest for the second time in the opening three minutes, A&M-Corpus Christi blew the contest open with 9-0 run over the ensuing two minutes to push it to a sizable 13-4 advantage. Houston Baptist's offense continued to stall as the home club doubled to margin by the end of the first, 20-10.
The Islanders kept the Huskies at bay, as the visiting squad never got closer than eight points throughout the entirety of the second.
This time it was the Islanders offense that underwent a dry spell as a couple buckets from Serrata and a Westbrook layup over a two-minute stretch midway through the third proved to be the home squad's only points in a six-point frame.
A HBU layup to conclude the third and trim the deficit to five proved to be all the Huskies had left, as the Islanders remained in control and collected their third-straight Southland meeting, keeping their hopes alive for a tournament berth.
A&M-Corpus Christi host Sam Houston in its home regular-season finale Wednesday, March 3 with a 7 p.m. tip at the Dugan Wellness Center.
