Baseball Hosts UTSA in Weekend Series at Chapman Field

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball pauses Southland action to host UTSA in a three-game, non-conference series at Chapman Field, beginning with a Friday, March 19 nightcap at 6 p.m. before a pair of 1 p.m. contests on Saturday (March 20) and Sunday (March 21).

Islander Notes
  • Home runs have highlighted the Islanders' spring, as A&M-Corpus Christi paces the Southland contingent with 13 while Josh Caraway is in a five-way tie for third with three homers.
  • There's been several contributors to the Islander offense as Itchy Burts leads the way with 16 hits, while Luke Marbach and Leo Markotic have totaled 12 and a three-way tie with 10 between Steven Rivera-Chijin, Josh Carraway and Mike Williams.
  • The Islanders pitching staff has caught a league-best 50 batters looking and ranks fifth in strikeouts with 133.
  • Hayden Thomas tops the Southland in batters struck out (36) and batters caught looking (12) through 24.0 innings of work.
  • Marbach ties for a sixth-best Southland ranking with five doubles.
  • Despite scoring 15 runs over the course of two games, McNeese got the better of the Islanders to open Southland play in a three-game road sweep.
  • After a stellar showing at the Shriners College Classic, senior Mike Williams was tabbed to the All-Tournament team after he batted .375 over the three-game tournament and tallied a hit in all three contests including a monster two-RBI home run in the Saturday showing against Rice that afforded the Islanders an early 2-0 advantage.  
  • Behind a noteworthy pitching performance from Hayden Thomas that saw him strike out 11 in 6.2 innings, the Islanders limited No. 10 Texas Tech to one run through six and took them down to the wire in a 4-3 final. Thomas has sat down 23 batters in his last two starts.
  • In their first series of 2021, A&M-Corpus Christi's pitching contingent held the Chippewas to 23 scoreless frames over the three-game set, led by starter Henry Bird's 5.0 innings of hitless and scoreless ball that saw him fan four batters in a 5-1 rout in the mound victory.
  • A&M-Corpus Christi head coach Scott Malone is in his 14th season at the helm of the Islanders and boasts a career record of 326-374-2 and 167-201-2 in Southland play.
  • Luke Marbach collected Southland Hitter of the Week honors on Feb. 23 after belting five hits that included two doubles and a long ball that helped drive home four runs.
Scouting the Opponent
  • UTSA enters the weekend with a 5-7 record and looks to halt a five-game slide dating back to March 10.
  • Griffin Paxton leads UTSA with a .378 average through 12 games, belting three doubles and two homers and driving in 11 runs.
  • The Roadrunners own a 4.61 team ERA with 98 strikeouts and 51 walks in 107.1 innings.
