SUGAR LAND, Texas – Posting its best round on the final day, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program submitted a top-five showing at the HBU Husky Intercollegiate at Riverbend Country Club.

The Islanders entered the day in seventh place out of 11 teams. They carded a 297 in round three on Tuesday for a 906 (+42) total. It came after they tallied a 304 in round one and 305 in round two on Monday.

It was the third time in four meets this spring that they've recorded their strongest score in round three.

"I'm really proud of our effort today. Our goal was to move up the leaderboard and bring in a round under 300, and we did that. This round had the potential to be a great round; we made quite a few birdies today, but we had multiple birdie opportunities that we didn't convert. It was so good to see Lucy and Lucie in the top 15; Kelli and Kellsey also had solid play this week," said head coach Joni Stephens.

Junior Lucy Martinez shot even par in round three to lead the team with a 224 overall score. She was one stroke ahead of freshman Lucie Charbonnier who notched a +2 in round 3 and 225 overall. Both Martinez and Charbonnier placed top-15 individually.

It was the second time this year that Martinez scored a 72 in the final round as she did the same at the Islander Classic on Feb. 23.

Also etching her best score in the final round was junior Kelli Ann Dugan. After registering a +4 in round one and +5 in round two, she turned in a +3 in round three for a 228 total. Just one stroke behind was senior Kellsey Sample with a 229. Both Dugan and Sample finished in the top-25.

Round it out was freshman Reese Drezins with a 238.

Sam Houston won the tournament with an 867, followed by Arkansas State (882), HBU (895) and UIW (896). A&M-Corpus Christi finished ahead of UTEP (911), Lamar (918), South Dakota (918), UT Arlington (936), UTRGV (943) and McLennan CC (1009).

The Islanders will next be in action on Monday, March 29 when they compete in the SHSU Bearkat Invitational.
