SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi golf program will look to make its move on day two of the HBU Husky Intercollegiate after finishing Monday in seventh out of 11 schools at Riverbend Country Club.
Â
The Islanders were consistent through two rounds with a 304 in round one and a 305 in round two for a 609 (+33) total. They can make-up ground in the final round as they are just six strokes out of fourth-place. Sam Houston is in first with a 576 (E).
Â
"Our goal at every tournament is to be in contention, top-three going into the last day. Going into this tournament, we knew we would need two rounds below 300 on the first day to position ourselves in the top threesome. Although we didn't accomplish that, we were very close. We are driving the ball better, we are hitting more greens, and we are having a lot more birdie opportunities from 20 feet and in. Unfortunately, our putts just didn't fall today," said head coach
Joni Stephens.
Â
Individually, just four strokes separate the team's No. 1 placeholder from the No. 5. Freshman
Lucie Charbonnier tallied a 76-75 (151) to sit in 17th, while sophomore
Lucy Martinez was one stroke behind 76-76 (152) and is in 23rd.
Â
In a tie for 27th is senior
Kellsey Sample and junior
Kelli Ann Dugan with identical 76-77 (153) scores. Freshman
Reese Drezins rounds it out with a 78-77 (155).
Â
The Islanders are used to finishing strong as they've submitted their best round on the final day in two of the three meets they've competed in this spring.
Â
The final round will begin at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday.
