LAKE CHARLES, La. – A big three-run homer from
Tristan Welch kick-started a five-run sixth and trimmed the McNeese margin to two in rally fashion, but the Cowboys countered with its own three-run seventh to slash any Texas A&M-Corpus Christi comeback chances and claim the 12-7 final Sunday afternoon at Joe Miller Park.
Brandon Petkoff opened up the Islanders' scoring with a solo shot in the first inning for an early edge, but the blue and green proved unable to contain the Cowboys' offense as McNeese scored six times in the first three innings to establish a 6-1 lead.
Singles from
Brandon Petkoff and
Leo Markotic followed by a Welch sacrifice fly plated a second Islander run, but McNeese engineered another huge three-run fifth to earn a sizable 9-2 margin and looked to run away with the series finale.
But the Islanders had other plans, as Markotic and Steven Rivera hits set the table for a three-run long ball courtesy of Welch and spark a late rally. Two walks and a
Josh Caraway double tacked on two more runs as the Islanders trimmed it to a two-run, 9-7 contest before
Cassius Shy stranded a pair of Cowboys in the home half to hold the score headed to the seventh.
McNeese quickly extinguished any Islander rally hopes with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the seventh on three singles and a hit by pitch.
The Cowboys touched up A&M-Corpus Christi pitching for 10 hits while also benefiting from seven walks and two hit batters.
A&M-Corpus Christi returns to Chapman Field for a non-conference set against UTSA starting Friday, March 19 at 6 p.m.
