CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Scoring all of its runs with two outs, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program broke an early pitcher's duel with clutch hits and blanked Sam Houston 5-0 to win the rubber match Saturday at Chapman Field.
Â
The game was tied 0-0 with two outs and two on in the fourth inning when sophomore
Sammi Thomas delivered a shot into the right center gap for a two RBI triple. A&M-Corpus Christi (9-10, 2-1 SLC) tacked on two more in the inning on an RBI single by junior
Tiler Noyola, and a first and third double steal play to go up 4-0.
Â
That was more than enough for sophomore
Beatriz Lara who went the distance in the circle. Lara threw a two-hit, complete-game shutout to improve to 6-1 on the season. It was her second complete-game of the weekend as she also earned the win over SHSU (4-13, 1-2 SLC) in game one of the series Friday.
Â
A&M-Corpus Christi's final run of the game came in the fifth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Thomas fell behind in the count 0-2 when she worked an 11-pitch at-bat that ended in an RBI walk.
Â
The Islanders outhit the Bearkats 5-2. Noyola registered her fourth multi-hit game of the year and stole two bases. Sophomore
Pal Egan and freshman
Haley Morse also knocked singles.
Â
Thomas is now on a four-game hitting streak and five-game reached base streak.
Â
The Islanders improved to 7-0 this year when leading after four innings.
Â
It was A&M-Corpus Christi's first series win over SHSU since 2015.
Â
The Islanders will have the week off from competition before returning to the diamond Friday when they travel to Lamar for a three-game series. Game one is scheduled for 4 p.m.
