SAN MARCOS, Texas – Sophomore
Beatriz Lara kept the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi softball program within striking distance, but Texas State grabbed a 2-0 decision Tuesday at the Bobcat Softball Stadium.
Lara threw 5.1 innings for A&M-Corpus Christi (9-11, 2-1 SLC) and limited the Bobcats (15-3, 0-0 SBC) to two runs. She was going up against a Texas State squad that was receiving votes in Tuesday's USA Today/NFCA Coaches Top-25 Poll.
The Islanders scattered three hits in the game. They came from junior
Tiler Noyola, sophomore
Ashleigh Sgambelluri and sophomore
Alyssa Escamilla.
The Bobcats scored one run in the first inning on a two-out RBI by Baylee Lemons.
A&M-Corpus Christi's best chance to score came in the fourth. Trailing 1-0, Sgambelluri led it off with a single to left field and moved to second on a one out walk by freshman
Haley Morse. Though, Texas State was able to get out of it with back-to-back strikeouts.
Texas State added an insurance run in the sixth on a double by ArieAnn Belvin. Freshman
Audrey McNeill entered in relief and recorded the final out for the Islanders.
Sgambelluri's hit in the fourth extended her reached base safely streak to five games.
Tori McCann started for the Bobcats and lasted 3.1 innings. Jessica Mullins was credited the win after tossing 3.2 no-hit innings with six strikeouts.
A&M-Corpus Christi will resume conference play this weekend when it plays a three-game series at Lamar. The first game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday.
