CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Maggie Murray's second-half goal deadlocked the South Texas Showdown, presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union, and forced overtime but UTRGV had the final tally to down the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer team 2-1 in its spring opener Wednesday at Dugan Stadium.
UTRGV controlled the offense in the opening period, lifting a pair of shots before Anna Torslov eventually connected at the 20-minute mark to boost the visiting squad to a 1-0 advantage. The Islanders answered UTRGV's seven shot attempts with a laser from
Natalie Gonzalez that was scooped up in goal.
Gonzalez's shot sparked a turnaround for the Islander offense, as A&M-Corpus Christi fired two shots in first five minutes of the second as
Maggie Murray slipped one past the UTRGV defense to knot the contest at one apiece. Both squads traded blows down the stretch but UTRGV came up with three crucial saves that forced an overtime decider. Â
UTRGV tallied both attempts in the overtime period, with the deciding blow coming from Anna Groedem to seal the outcome at the 95-minute mark.
A&M-Corpus Christi begins a three-game road swing with a stop at UTSA on Sunday, Feb. 7 with kick off slated for 1 p.m.
