LAKE CHARLES, La. – A strong team effort led to a 3-0 victory for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi soccer program over McNeese on a windy Sunday at the Cowgirl Field.
The Islanders (2-3-1, 1-1 SLC) knocked off a McNeese (2-2, 2-1 SLC) squad that entered play 2-0 in conference. A&M-Corpus Christi used three goals in the second half to pull away.
"The first half won us the game. Being able to go into the second half 0-0 after playing 45 minutes with 30 mph win in our face was key. We took care of business in the second half. It was a great win against a team that was predicted to finish two spots ahead of us," said head coach
Craig Shaw.
After a scoreless first half, the Islanders got on the board in the 55th minute on a shot by senior
Abby Deakin. It was assisted by senior
Larissa Fagundes.
A&M-Corpus Christi made it 2-0 in the 60th minute on a tally by Fagundes, assisted by freshman
Maggie Murray.
The score changed to 3-0 in the 84th minute. The goal was originally credited to senior
Kayla Gove but changed to an own goal by McNeese.
Also with shots in the game were sophomore
Emma Gibbs, senior
Celia Hilsabeck and junior
Siri O'Donnell.
Senior goalkeeper
Kyleigh Hall posted a shutout in net. She made five saves and also stood tall against eight McNeese corner kicks. It was Hall's second shutout of the year.
Deakin, O'Donnell and freshman
Emma Herrera all logged 90 minutes.
A&M-Corpus Christi is now 4-3-1 all-time against McNeese and has won the last two matchups.
The Islanders will play their first conference home game Friday when they host Northwestern State at 7 p.m. at the Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium.
